This is a great article on why we don't do a full sit up in pilates. Not only does it not provide you with stomach you wish for but can also cause injury.
Sometimes in class we hold a pose for a longer period of time. This can be held from 1-5 minutes. These stretches are done for a reason. Not only because they allow the body to adjust the pose but they have further reaching properties as described in this article.
The core doesn't just include the stomach muscles. But also incorporates the back, glutes and shoulders. If you visualise a square box from the top of your shoulders to below your bottom this is all classed as your core. The glutes are an important part of the core and is your power house.
