Sometimes in class we hold a pose for a longer period of time. This can be held from 1-5 minutes. These stretches are done for a reason. Not only because they allow the body to adjust the pose but they have further reaching properties as described in this article.
The core doesn't just include the stomach muscles. But also incorporates the back, glutes and shoulders.
